ABOUT DHORDO
The Village That Became the World's Most Celebrated Festival
Dhordo is a small village in the Bhuj taluka of Kutch, sitting at the very edge of the Great Rann — the vast, crystalline salt desert that transforms into a shimmering white ocean every dry season. For most of history, Dhordo was home to the Mir community, nomadic pastoralists who had lived along the India–Pakistan border for generations, herding their livestock across the salt flats and performing their extraordinary folk music at village celebrations.
The Rann Utsav festival began in 2005 when Gujarat Tourism recognised the extraordinary potential of the White Rann as a tourism destination — not just for its natural spectacle, but for the living cultural heritage of the Kutchi communities. Over the years, the festival has grown from a small seasonal event into one of India's largest and most internationally recognised cultural festivals, drawing over 4 lakh visitors each season and putting Dhordo on the global tourism map.
In 2023, the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) selected Dhordo as one of the Best Tourism Villages in the world — a remarkable recognition that acknowledges not just the beauty of the destination, but the way in which tourism has been developed here in harmony with the local community. The Shaam-E-Sarhad resort, run by the Mir community themselves, has won multiple national tourism awards and is a model of community-led tourism done right.
What makes Dhordo singular among Indian festival destinations is the authentic human scale of it. Despite its fame, the Tent City retains an intimate atmosphere. You can walk to the White Desert in ten minutes. You can watch the artisans at their embroidery frames in the morning and be at a folk concert in the evening. The Gujarati thali at dinner is cooked fresh, unlimited, and genuinely delicious. And the sky above — mercifully free of light pollution — shows you more stars than you've seen anywhere else in India.

THE EXPERIENCE
What It Feels Like to Sleep at the Edge of the Rann
There is a particular quality to the silence at Dhordo Tent City after the bonfire fades. The folk singers have taken their final bow, the fire has died to embers, and the Rann stretches out beyond the tent lines into an absolute whiteness. The cold of a December night in Kutch is different from other cold — it has a clarity to it, and the stars overhead seem unusually bright, unusually close.
This is the experience that draws people back to Rann Utsav year after year. Not just the Instagram moment of a sunset on salt flats (though that is real, and it is magnificent), but the slower pleasures of being in a landscape that is unlike anywhere else in India. The White Rann at sunrise — when the first light catches the salt crystals and the entire desert floor turns gold and silver and pink — is one of the great natural spectacles of the subcontinent.
The Tent City itself is surprisingly comfortable. The Swiss cottages have proper beds, attached bathrooms, and the kind of warmth that comes from a well-designed fabric structure absorbing the day's heat. The AC tents, with their climate-controlled interiors and wooden deck sit-outs, are genuinely luxurious. The food is a revelation — unlimited Gujarati thali means the kadhi and the dhokla and the bajra rotla keep coming until you surrender to fullness.
Dhordo Tent City is not a camping experience. It is not basic or rough. It is a curated immersion in one of India's most extraordinary landscapes, delivered with genuine warmth and with the living cultural heritage of the Kutchi people as your constant backdrop.
